Bhoothathankettu Dam & Reserve Forest

BHOOTHATHANKETTU is a dam and also a tourist spot in Kerala, India. It is situated outside the village of PINDIMANA, about 10 kms away from the town of KOTHAMANGALAM and 50 kms away from the main city of Kochi. The original natural dam has been supplemented by a modern dam impounding the BHOOTHATHANKETTU Reservoir (THATTEKAD Reservoir). During the MALAYATOOR pilgrimage season, pilgrims use the roads through the forest to reach the church. Large blocks of unshaped stones are placed on both sides of the Periyar River to form the dam, making it look like a natural formation built by superhumans. The name Bhoothathan Kettu, means “monster fort”; past generations believed it was built by a Bhootham(monster).

Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary

The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, covering an area of barely 25 km, and located about 12 km from Kothamangalam (Kerala state, India), was the first bird sanctuary in Kerala. Salim Ali, one of the best known ornithologist described this sanctuary as the richest bird habitat on peninsular India. Thattekkad literally means flat forest,and the region is an evergreen low-land forest located between the branches of Periyar River, the longest river in Kerala.

Malankara Dam Reservoir

A gravity dam built across the Thodupuzha River, the Malankara dam supports the irrigation of the region and has been constructed to use the tailwater coming from the Moolamattom powerhouse. Situated near the Thodupuzha-Moolamattom Road, the reservoir Dam is a very famous tourist spot. The dam remains open to the tourists throughout the year and is a perfect place for fishing and boating. There is a park covering 15-acre land situated near the reservoir which is under construction. There is an artificial lake that has been created by the Malankara Dam across the waters from the tail-gate of the Moolamattom Power House. Since the dam remains unexplored by many, it has managed to retain its natural beauty. Thomman Kuth Waterfalls

Thommankuthu is a famous seven-step waterfall, known for its picturesque settings and amazing lush green jungles that offers plenty of scope for adventure tourism in Idukki. Located approximately 17 km from Thodupuzha in Idukki district of Kerala, this majestic fall is one of the most popular attractions in Munnar, surrounded by rich dense forests and tea plantation. The tourists visit this heavenly attraction to experience forest trekking, rock climbing, nature walk, bathing, etc. and to capture their shots in camera to save the memories forever. Elaveezhapoonchira

Elaveezhapoonchira is a beautiful hill station that lies in proximity to Melukavu Mattom. It is situated in the midst of three beautiful hillocks namely, Mankunnu, Kudayathoormala and Thonippara. The hill station derives its name from two words ‘Elaveezha’ and ‘poonchira’, meaning a valley where leaves do not fall. Elaveezhapoonchira, which spreads over an area of thousand acres, is a place where there are no trees or plantations. It is believed that the site was the bathing place of Paanchali, the legendary Queen of Mahabharata. This is a brilliant spot to enjoy a sunrise or a sunset.

Athirappilly Waterfalls

Athirappilly Falls, is situated in Athirappilly Panchayat in Chalakudy Taluk of Thrissur District in Kerala, India on the Chalakudy River, which originates from the upper reaches of the Western Ghats at the entrance to the Sholayar ranges. It is the largest waterfall in Kerala, which stands tall at 80 feet. Just a short drive from Athirappilly to the Vazhachal falls, which is close to dense green forests that are home to many endangered and endemic species of flora and fauna.

There is another waterfall on the way from Athirappilly to Vazhachal Falls, in close proximity to the road, which is locally called "Charpa Falls". Athirappilly Falls is the largest waterfall in Kerala and is nicknamed "The Niagara of India"

Vagamon

Vagamon is a hill station located in Kottayam- Idukki border of Kerala. It has a cool climate with the temperature between 10-23°C during a summer midday. It is situated 1,100 metres above sea level.Vagamon is a tiny plantation township in Central Travancore, Vagamon has an overtone of green. With a never-ending line of lush green hills, breathtaking ravines and meandering rivulets.

POOYAMKUTTY

Pooyamkutty is situated along Pooyamkutty river, a tributary of the Periyar.Pooyamkutty is known for a hydroelectric project by KSEB. The project was designed to build a hydroelectric power station at Peendimedu waterfall, 8 kilometres deep inside the forest from Pooyamkutty.Leopards, macaques, spotted deer, wild boars and lots and lots of bamboo trees constitute a major portion of the forest. It is also a main elephant migration route.

Another interesting fact about Pooyamkutty is that a group of tribal people live inside the forest in complete harmony with the wild. The forest area and the nearby town is separated by the Pooyamkutty river.There is a bridge that connects the town and forest and during monsoon, the river will cover up this path. So, it’s better not visit the place during the rainy season.

KALADI SREE SHANKARACHARYA TEMPLE & MUSIUM

Kaladi is the birth place of the great humanitarian and philosopher, Adi Sankaracharya. The place is blessed with many important temples, including shrines dedicated to Sri Sankara, Sarada Devi, Sri Krishna and Sri Ramakrishna. Festival celebrations here are solemn events that attract believers in large numbers.It is believed that the Sankaracharya was caught by a crocodile that refused to leave him until his mother let him accept Sanyas (renunciation). This location is called Crocodile Ghat and it attracts numerous visitors.

The house where Adi Sankara lived, about one thousand two hundred years ago, is now a temple devoted to Goddess Sharada - and is known as Adi Sankara Janmabhoomi temple. The Sringeri Matha administers it. According to history, the thirty-third pontiff of Sringeri Sri Sachidananda Shiva Abinava Narasimha Bharati located this place with the help of scholars one hundred years ago.

MALAYATTOOR
